Every so often Club Silicon needs to blow off a bit of steam. This will be the first occasion and I truly believe it is well deserved.
Normally I am loathe to watch advertisements on television. I have a good many needlessly stored in my brain taking up valuable space as a result of my audio photographic memory, and while I understand the need for them, I usually hit the "mute" button or fast forward thanks to the wondrous nature of DVR.
These days the popular ad campaign technique is to call every single movie "the number one movie in America". This of course can be true at the time the ad is aired, for each week the box office has a #1 sales rank. However, the repetitive nature of the announcement makes it not just annoying, but downright infuriating.
This is a plea the marketing departments of "the big four" or whatever the number is of major motion picture studios: come up with something new.
A minor addition to this rant is another problem with previews and television film ads alike. Most of the time you can't understand the dialogue because it is mixed too low, is usually a mumbled punch line to a joke you didn't hear in the first place, and is preceded and proceeded by music at least 6db louder than the voice. Again, this needs fixing. And I don't care that it won't lead to more sales. Do it anyway, morons.
Respectfully submitted,
CS
